Scientists have just come up with an answer to why we swing our arms back and forth when we walk. One would think that this swinging motion would use more energy than keeping our arms still, but in fact they found that keeping your arms still while walking uses up 12 percent more energy than letting them swing freely. It was always thought that swinging our arms while walking was one of those unnecessary things that was passed down to us from our evolutionary ancestors, like our appendix, but apparently not. It might be weird to think about, but in this sense, “moving” your arms actually burns up less calories than not “moving” them. So keep swinging those arms and making your ancestors proud!
