An article from Techcrunch confirms that in certain metro cities Google maps will now show you traffic on back roads including highways.  The way they get this information is that they use the gps feature in anonymous cell phones to determine speed on certain roads.  The data is then sent back to Google where they then update the map.  I think this is definitely useful and cant wait to see what Google has in store next.
